Origins (18th-19th Century). Founded 1783 in Waterford, Ireland, by brothers George & William Penrose. Their goal: produce fine flint glass to rival English and continental crystal. Early Waterford crystal was known for clarity and brilliance, achieved by using very pure silica and a high lead content. The factory became famous quickly but closed in 1851 due to economic challenges (including tariffs and competition). Colleen is a traditional Waterford cut-crystal pattern produced in Ireland.
